HTML title Attribute on Form Inputs

Last reviewed

The HTML title attribute supplies advisory text for an input. Browsers may show it as a tooltip on hover and may include it in a pattern mismatch message. Because tooltips are not reliably available to touch and keyboard users, provide a label and visible instructions too.

What gets submitted

Fill in the form above and press its button. The demo stops the request and lists every name=value pair the browser would send, plus the controls it leaves out.

With a free access key in the form, these fields land in your splitforms dashboard; access_key and botcheck are read by splitforms, not stored as lead data.

Common mistakes

Title attribute mistakes to avoid

Make the field and its instructions usable without a tooltip.

  1. A tooltip is not accessible to everyone

Hover tooltips are generally unavailable on touch devices and do not appear on keyboard focus in most browsers. Keep essential instructions visible and connect them with aria-describedby.

  2. Title does not replace a label

Use an associated <label> for the input. Assistive technology may use title as a fallback accessible name or description, but its announcement varies.

  3. Title is not a custom error message

Browsers may append title to a pattern mismatch message, but wording varies. Use setCustomValidity() for a custom message and clear it when the value becomes valid.

How SplitForms works

What happens after someone submits your form?

splitforms receives the submission, filters spam, saves it to your dashboard and emails you — then, on paid plans, sends it on to your webhooks and integrations. No backend infrastructure to build.

View all FAQs
What does title do on an input?

It provides advisory text that browsers commonly display as a tooltip on hover. It is not reliably available on touch devices or through keyboard focus, so put important instructions in visible text.

How does title work with pattern validation?

When a non-empty value fails the pattern, browsers may include the title text as a hint in their validation message. Describe the expected format in title and in visible text; browser messages vary.

Can title replace a label?

No. Associate a visible label with the input. Screen readers may use title as a fallback accessible name or description, but support and announcements vary.

How do I set a custom validation message?

Call `setCustomValidity()` on the input with your message and clear it with an empty string when the error is resolved. Otherwise the input remains invalid.

Is the title attribute submitted with form data?

No. Title is advisory text, not form data. An enabled named input submits its name and value.
