Is splitforms really free? What's the catch?

There's no catch. The Free tier is 1,000 form submissions per month, unlimited forms, spam filtering, and webhooks — forever, no credit card. Most competitors give you a 14-day trial and call it 'free'. We don't. The Pro and 4-Year plans subsidize the Free tier and that's the business model.

How does pricing compare to Formspree, Web3Forms, Basin, and Getform?

Free tier: splitforms gives 1,000 submissions/month vs Formspree (50), Basin (50), Getform (50), Web3Forms (250). Paid: Pro is $5/month for 5,000 submissions vs Formspree's $20/month for the same volume. The $59 4-Year plan has no equivalent at any competitor — it's the cheapest way to run a contact form on a real website.

Why a 4-year plan and not a true lifetime deal?

Lifetime deals are how indie SaaS dies. We picked 48 months because it's long enough to feel like a deal (cheaper than 12 months of Pro) but short enough that we can keep our promises. After 48 months you renew at whatever the rate is then, or move on. No surprises.

What happens if I exceed 1,000 submissions on the Free plan?

Submissions still arrive — they're flagged 'over-quota' in your dashboard but never deleted or rejected. We'll email you a few days before you hit the limit. If you exceed two months in a row, we suggest upgrading to Pro. We never just drop traffic.

Are there any hidden fees, overage charges, or per-form fees?

No. Your tier price is what you pay — there are no overage charges, no per-form fees, no email-volume fees, no webhook fees, and no 'enterprise add-on' upsells. Unlimited forms on every tier including Free.

Can I cancel anytime? Is there a refund?

Yes. Cancel from your dashboard at any time — you keep access until the end of the billing period. We refund within 14 days, no questions asked. The 4-Year plan is also refundable in the first 30 days.

Do you offer discounts for students, non-profits, or open source?

Yes. Email hello@splitforms.com from your .edu address, your non-profit domain, or with a link to your public OSS project and we'll sort you out — usually a free Pro plan for as long as you're active.

Can I use one access key on multiple websites or client projects?

Absolutely — and most agencies on Pro do exactly this. One account, one access key, multiple client websites, all submissions in one dashboard. You can also create multiple forms per account if you want to keep client data separated.

What payment methods do you accept?

All major credit and debit cards (Visa, Mastercard, AmEx) via Stripe. Apple Pay and Google Pay at checkout. SEPA and ACH for annual prepay. Cryptocurrency for the 4-Year plan on request.

Do you charge sales tax or VAT?

Stripe handles regional tax compliance — VAT for EU, GST for AU/IN, sales tax for relevant US states. Your invoice shows the exact breakdown. Business buyers can add a VAT/EIN number at checkout for reverse charge.

What counts as a 'submission'? Do test or spam submissions count?

A submission is one successful POST to the splitforms API that passes validation and is stored in your dashboard. Honeypot-flagged spam never counts toward your quota. Validation failures (missing access key, blocked domain, malformed body) never count. Test submissions you make from your own dashboard's preview tool also do not count.

Do unused submissions roll over to the next month?

No — quotas reset at the start of each calendar month, and unused submissions do not roll over. We keep the model simple on purpose: you always know exactly how many submissions are available this month, and you never have to track a balance.

Are file uploads supported, and do they count toward the quota?

File uploads are shipping next on the Pro and 4-Year plans (up to 25MB per submission, S3-compatible storage with signed download URLs). Each form submission with attached files counts as one submission, not one per file. Free-plan users will keep text-only submissions; uploads stay on paid tiers.

Can I use my own custom domain for the form endpoint?

Yes — Pro and 4-Year customers can point a CNAME like forms.yourdomain.com at splitforms and POST forms to that URL instead of splitforms.com/api/submit. Useful for brand consistency, CSP-tightened sites, and white-label client work. Free-tier accounts use the shared splitforms.com endpoint.

Are there team accounts, multiple seats, or shared inboxes?

Today an account is a single login with unlimited forms and an account-wide BCC list, which covers most agencies and small teams. True multi-seat team accounts with per-user roles and audit logs are on the roadmap and will be included on Pro and 4-Year at no extra cost when they ship.

Is splitforms GDPR-compliant? Do you offer a DPA?

Yes. Submissions live in Postgres with row-level security so only you can read your own data — splitforms never sells, shares, or trains models on form submissions. We sign a Data Processing Addendum (DPA) on request for any plan, free included. EU data residency is on the roadmap for the Pro and 4-Year tiers.

What are the technical limits — payload size, rate limits, fields per form?

Payload up to 1 MB per submission on Free, 10 MB on Pro and 4-Year (with file uploads). Rate limit defaults to 60 submissions per minute per access key on Free, 600/minute on Pro and 4-Year — raise on request. No hard limit on fields per form or forms per account. The single endpoint is multi-region edge-deployed with a 14ms median p50.

How do I upgrade from Free to Pro, or change plans later?

Upgrade from your dashboard at /dashboard/billing in two clicks — your access key stays the same, your forms keep working, and the new quota applies immediately. Downgrades take effect at the next billing period so you keep the higher quota you already paid for. Switching from Pro to the 4-Year plan credits any remaining Pro time toward the one-time payment.

What kind of support do I get on each plan?

Free plan: email support at hello@splitforms.com with a one-business-day response, plus public docs and GitHub Discussions. Pro plan: priority support, under 4-hour response during business hours. 4-Year plan: same priority support as Pro for the full 48 months. Status, incidents, and historic uptime live at status.splitforms.com.
