HTML input type time

Last reviewed

An <input type="time"> shows a time picker whose display (12-hour or 24-hour) follows the user's locale, but the submitted value is always 24-hour HH:MM, such as 14:30. The step attribute is in seconds (default 60). An empty field sends an empty string. There is no time zone, so store the zone separately if needed.

What gets submitted

Fill in the form above and press its button. The demo stops the request and lists every name=value pair the browser would send, plus the controls it leaves out.

With a free access key in the form, these fields land in your splitforms dashboard; access_key and botcheck are read by splitforms, not stored as lead data.

Common mistakes

HTML Input Type Time not working? Here's why.

Most broken forms come down to a few small mistakes with the <input type="time">. Check these before you ship, then forward every submission to Slack or a webhook.

  1. Display follows the locale, but submitted value is always 24-hour

Even when the browser displays the time in 12-hour format with AM/PM according to the user's locale, the form always submits in 24-hour HH:MM (or HH:MM:SS).

  2. No time zone is sent with the time

The submitted time contains no time zone offset. If the zone matters, capture it separately with a hidden field populated from Intl.DateTimeFormat().resolvedOptions().timeZone.

  3. min later than max wraps past midnight

If min is later than max (such as min="22:00" max="02:00"), the allowed range wraps past midnight. Be sure your server-side validation accounts for overnight spans.

  4. step does not always restrict mobile pickers

Setting step="900" flags invalid times on form submission, but some mobile pickers still let users pick any minute. Always validate the step constraint on the server.

Questions

HTML Input Type Time questions, answered.

View all FAQs
What format does input type time submit?

It submits a 24-hour time string as HH:MM (such as 14:30), or HH:MM:SS if seconds are enabled with step. The format is fixed by the HTML standard regardless of the user's locale.

How to force a 24-hour display on input type time?

You cannot force a 12-hour or 24-hour display in HTML; the picker's visual format is chosen by the user's browser and operating system locale. The submitted value is always 24-hour.

How to allow only 15-minute steps?

Set step="900" on the input. The step attribute is measured in seconds, so 900 seconds equals 15 minutes, allowing times like :00, :15, :30, and :45.

How to limit input type time to business hours?

Use the min and max attributes with 24-hour time values, such as min="09:00" max="17:00". Times outside this window will be flagged as invalid on submit.

How to send the user's time zone with the time?

Add a hidden input (<input type="hidden" name="timezone">) and set its value using JavaScript: Intl.DateTimeFormat().resolvedOptions().timeZone before the form submits.
