HTML input type range (slider)

Last reviewed

An <input type="range"> renders a slider. The defaults are min 0, max 100 and step 1, and the value starts at the midpoint. It always submits a number string as name=value and is never empty, so required has no effect. Show the current value with an <output> element and a one-line oninput.

What gets submitted

Fill in the form above and press its button. The demo stops the request and lists every name=value pair the browser would send, plus the controls it leaves out.

With a free access key in the form, these fields land in your splitforms dashboard; access_key and botcheck are read by splitforms, not stored as lead data.

Common mistakes

HTML Input Type Range not working? Here's why.

Most broken forms come down to a few small mistakes with the <input type="range">. Check these before you ship, then forward every submission to Slack or a webhook.

  1. There is no visible number by default

A slider shows only a thumb on a track, so people can't see the exact value. Add an <output> next to it and update it with oninput.

  2. required does nothing

A range input always has a value, so it is never empty and required never blocks submit.

  3. Untouched looks the same as a real choice

The value starts at the midpoint, so a submitted 50 could mean the person chose 50 or never moved the slider. If that matters, add a checkbox or use a number input or select instead.

  4. Values snap to the step, so check again on the server

A value that doesn't fit the step snaps to the nearest step. Anyone can still send any value without your form, so parse the number on the server and check the range again.

Questions

HTML Input Type Range questions, answered.

View all FAQs
How do I show the value of a range slider?

Add an <output> element next to the slider and update it as the slider moves, for example oninput="budgetOut.value = budget.value" on the form. Set the output's starting text to the slider's starting value.

How do I set a default value on a range input?

Add a value attribute, for example value="5000". Without it, the slider starts at the midpoint between min and max, which is 50 with the defaults.

Does required work on input type range?

No. A range input always has a value, so it is never empty and required has no effect. Validate the value on the server instead.

What does the backend receive from a range input?

A name=value pair with the number as a string, such as budget=5000. Parse it as a number on the server and check it is inside your min and max.

How do I add tick marks to a range slider?

Create a <datalist> with an <option> for each tick, give it an id, and point the range input's list attribute at that id. Browsers that support it draw a tick mark at each option value.
