Typeform review: a polished form builder priced per response

Typeform is a legitimate, well-secured hosted form builder from Barcelona, best known for one-question-at-a-time forms with free branching logic. The catch is per-response pricing. Free allows 10 responses a month across all forms, and Basic is $28/month billed yearly ($39 monthly) for 100. Removing Typeform branding, URL redirects and reCAPTCHA start on Plus. Worth it when the form experience is the product; costly for a plain contact form.

splitforms makes a competing form backend. This review is based on Typeform's public pricing, docs and policies, checked .

Who Typeform is for

Best for

  • Surveys, quizzes and lead-qualification flows where the one-question-at-a-time experience is the point
  • Non-technical teams that want branching logic, scores and calculations in a visual builder, Free plan included
  • Marketing teams that want ready-made integrations such as HubSpot, Mailchimp, Google Sheets, Slack and Zapier
  • Buyers who need SOC 2 Type II and ISO 27001 reports, or a HIPAA BAA and EU data hosting on Enterprise

Not for

  • Contact forms with steady traffic: Free stops at 10 responses a month and Basic at 100
  • Anyone who needs the form to live in their own HTML and styling rather than a Typeform-hosted page or embed
  • Free or Basic users who need to remove Typeform branding, redirect to their own thank-you page or add reCAPTCHA
  • Teams outside Enterprise that need data stored in the EU (standard accounts are hosted on AWS in Virginia, USA)
  • Budgets that cannot absorb a mid-month plan upgrade: auto-upgrade is switched on by default when you first pay

Pros and cons

Pros

  • Branching logic, scores, calculations, variables and multiple endings are on the Free plan, not paywalled
  • Unlimited forms and, since 2023, unlimited questions per form on every plan, Free included
  • A large set of native integrations (HubSpot, Mailchimp, Google Sheets, Airtable, Slack, Calendly, Zapier) plus a public API
  • Signed webhooks (HMAC SHA-256 in a Typeform-Signature header) with documented automatic retries and a 30-day delivery log
  • Strong published security: SOC 2 Type II, ISO 27001:2022, 27017, 27018 and 42001, AES-256 at rest, TLS 1.2 and 1.3 in transit
  • Clear response-limit warnings by email and in the app at 90% and 100% of the monthly allowance
  • Cancelling or downgrading keeps your forms and past responses; nothing is deleted

Cons

  • Free is 10 responses a month across all forms combined, and test responses count too
  • Basic covers only 100 responses a month; that is $0.28 per response at full use, billed yearly
  • Typeform branding stays on Free and Basic; removing it, redirecting to your own page and reCAPTCHA start on Plus
  • At the limit, forms go Private and visitors see a closed message, so leads are turned away rather than queued
  • Auto-upgrade is on by default after your first payment, and upgrades it triggers carry into the next billing period
  • EU data hosting, custom domains, SSO and HIPAA are Enterprise-only; standard data sits on AWS in Virginia, USA
  • Fees are non-refundable, and the pricing page's comparison table shows different prices from its own plan cards

What Typeform is (and how it differs from a form backend)

Typeform is a hosted form builder. You design a form, survey or quiz in Typeform's editor, and Typeform renders it, usually one question at a time, collects the answers and stores them in its Results panel. You share it as a typeform link, embed it on your site with Typeform's embed code, or on Plus and up serve it from a custom subdomain. Custom domains are Enterprise-only.

That is a different job from a form backend such as splitforms, which publishes this review. A backend receives submissions from an HTML form you write and style yourself on your own site. Typeform owns the whole form; a backend owns only what happens after Submit. The two overlap for lead and contact forms, which is where the pricing comparison at the end of this review matters.

Typeform was founded in 2012 and its about page says it serves more than 150,000 businesses with a remote-first team of over 250 people. The product has grown beyond forms into Contacts & Automations, response enrichment, video questions, AI-moderated research and an MCP server for AI tools, but the core plans are still priced by monthly responses.

Is Typeform free? How tight the free plan is

Yes, there is a Free plan that needs only an email address. Typeform's Free plan article lists unlimited forms, templates and design options, 10 responses a month across all your forms, branching logic with calculations, scores and variables, URL parameters (formerly hidden fields), custom endings, embedding, result downloads, basic reports, the APIs, Typeform AI and integrations such as Calendly, Zapier, Google Sheets, Slack, Mailchimp and Airtable.

The 10-response cap is the constraint. It is shared across every form in the account and resets monthly, unused responses do not carry over, and the help center says responses you submit yourself as tests on a published form count against it. Deleting a response does not give it back. A contact form with any real traffic will close within days.

Questions are no longer capped: the Free plan launched in 2021 with 10 questions per form, and Typeform staff said in February 2023 that the limit had been removed. The current plan article lists no question limit, and the pricing page shows unlimited questions per form.

The paid-only list in the same article is long. It includes file uploads, payment questions, removing Typeform branding, your brand logo, redirecting to a URL after submit, reCAPTCHA and invisible bot detection, duplicate-response prevention, follow-up emails to respondents, partial responses, multi-language forms, team seats, EU data hosting, live chat and priority support. You can try many of these in trial mode on Free, but a form that uses them cannot be published until you upgrade or remove them.

Paid plans and what happens at the response limit

The core plans on typeform.com/pricing are Basic at $39/month, or $28/month billed yearly for 100 responses a month and 1 user, Plus at $79/month, or $56/month billed yearly for 1,000 and 3 users, and Business at $129/month, or $91/month billed yearly for 10,000 and 5 users. Talent ($169/month or $119/month yearly) targets HR teams, Growth Flow ($379/month or $266/month yearly, after a 14-day trial that needs a card) adds enrichment and automations, and Enterprise is priced by sales.

Each plan can buy more monthly responses in steps: Basic up to 750, Plus up to 2,500 and Business up to 50,000, which is the ceiling on self-serve plans. The prices of those steps are chosen in the account's Plan & billing screen and are not published on the pricing page. Note also that the pricing page's own comparison table shows lower figures than its plan cards, and its FAQ says annual billing saves up to 16% while the toggle says 30%, so confirm the price at checkout.

At 90% and 100% of the allowance Typeform emails you and shows a warning in the workspace. At 100% your forms switch to Private mode and respondents see a message that the form is not accepting responses; forms reopen when the month resets or you upgrade.

The alternative is auto-upgrade. With it on, a full Basic plan moves to the 250-response tier after the 101st response, then to 500 and 750, then to Plus features at 1,000, each billed pro rata for the rest of the period. The help center says the toggle is on by default on the confirmation screen when you upgrade from Free, that upgrades stay in place for later billing periods, and that going back means turning auto-upgrade off and downgrading separately.

  • Limits are per account, not per form: three forms on Plus share one 1,000-response allowance
  • Responses do not roll over and deleted responses still count for the month
  • Cancelling keeps your forms and responses, but forms may close to new responses and seats are reduced

File uploads, logic and spam protection

The File Upload question is a Basic-and-up feature. It accepts any file type up to 10 MB per file; for several files you add several File Upload questions inside a question group. Storage is 1 GB on Basic, 2 GB on Plus and 4 GB on Business and above, enforced as fair use rather than a hard stop. Files are downloaded from the Results panel or as a zip with an export.

One privacy detail is worth knowing. Exporting responses, sending them in follow-up messages, or passing them to an integration or webhook creates a public link to each uploaded file. Typeform says the links are long and hard to guess but should be treated as shareable. Deleting a response deletes its file.

Logic is Typeform's strength and it is on Free: branching between questions, calculations for scores and prices, variables, recall of earlier answers and multiple endings. Paid plans add knowledge quiz mode (Basic), partial-response capture (one submit point on Basic and Plus, three on Business), and redirecting to your own URL after submit (Plus). Partial responses on forms that use logic or scoring need a Growth plan, per the pricing page.

Spam tools are paid. reCAPTCHA starts on Plus, and invisible bot detection and duplicate-response prevention are on the Free plan article's paid-only list. None of the help articles we checked describe a spam filter on Free or Basic, and every response received through a published form counts toward the allowance.

Integrations, webhooks and the API

Typeform connects to other tools from each form's Connect panel. The Free plan article lists Calendly, Zapier, Google Sheets, Slack, Mailchimp, Airtable, HubSpot and Pipedrive, although its own paid-only list also names HubSpot and Pipedrive, so check the Connect panel for your plan. Business adds Salesforce, Google Analytics, Google Tag Manager and Meta Pixel. Zapier covers more than 500 other services.

Webhooks send each completed response, and optionally partial responses, as a JSON POST to an HTTPS URL you set; plain http URLs are refused. The pricing page lists webhooks and integrations among Basic's features, while the Free plan article lists the APIs on Free and does not mention webhooks either way. Typeform keeps a delivery log for 30 days and lets you send test requests.

Security and delivery are documented properly. If you add a secret, each request carries a Typeform-Signature header with sha256= and a base64 HMAC SHA-256 of the raw body. A delivery fails after 30 seconds without a response. Rate-limit and similar errors (429, 408, 503, 423) are retried every 2 to 3 minutes for 10 hours, other failures are retried with back-off over several hours, and a 404 or 410 disables the webhook at once. Typeform also disables webhooks that fail every attempt at high volume, and emails the owner when it does.

Owner email alerts are a per-form setting called Send email for new responses. It is off by default, sends to the email on your Typeform account, and covers completed responses or completed and partial ones. Emails to the person who filled in the form are a paid feature.

Data location, GDPR and who runs Typeform

Typeform is run by Typeform SL, a Spanish company at Via Augusta 29-31, Barcelona. For customers in the US, the contracting party is Typeform US LLC, a Delaware company that resells the service, and the terms (effective April 21, 2024) apply Delaware law with a jury-trial and class-action waiver; everyone else contracts with Typeform SL under Spanish law and Barcelona courts.

Typeform's security article says the platform is hosted on Amazon Web Services with its main servers in Virginia, USA. An EU data center exists, but EU data hosting is available only on Enterprise and Growth Custom plans, and only a listed set of integrations works there. Customer data is encrypted at rest with AES-256 and in transit with TLS 1.2 and 1.3, and backups are kept for 15 days.

For respondent data, Typeform acts as your processor under a Data Processing Agreement (updated July 20, 2026) that uses the EU Standard Contractual Clauses and a UK addendum for transfers and names AWS among its sub-processors. The terms give Typeform a license to respondents' data only to provide and improve the service, and on an aggregated basis for improvement. The privacy policy was last updated March 14, 2024; GDPR requests go to [email protected].

Certifications listed on the security page: SOC 2 Type II, ISO/IEC 27001:2022, 27017, 27018 and 42001 (AI management), CSA STAR Level 1 and PCI DSS merchant level 3 for card payments handled through Stripe. It says HIPAA compliance was assessed and a Business Associate Agreement can be signed; the pricing page places HIPAA on Enterprise only.

Support, refunds and cancelling

Support runs through the help center, a community forum and a contact form at the bottom of each help article. The pricing page lists standard email support, with live chat and prioritized email from Business and on Growth Flow, and VIP onboarding with a dedicated Customer Success or Outcomes Manager on Enterprise. Typeform publishes a status page at status.typeform.com.

Billing is strict. The payment terms say fees are non-refundable and no credit is given for subscriptions or add-ons cancelled before the end of the period, and the service terms require billing disputes within 30 days of purchase. Plans renew automatically. Downgrades take effect at the end of the paid period, and the help center confirms your forms and past responses are kept, though forms that use paid features go into trial mode and stop collecting.

When a plain HTML form and a backend fit better

Per-response pricing is the issue for simple forms. A contact form that gets 300 messages a month outgrows Free (10) and Basic (100). Basic add-ons reach 750 at prices Typeform shows only in the account, and the next published price is Plus at $56/month billed yearly, $672 a year. At Basic's full allowance billed yearly, each response costs about $0.28.

A form backend prices the same job by volume. splitforms Free is 500 submissions in total (a one-time allowance, not monthly), Pro is $5/month for 5,000 submissions a month and Annual at $49/year for 15,000 a month. Owner email notifications are included on every plan, spam filtering is rule-based with no CAPTCHA required, a custom redirect after submit works on any plan, and paid plans add HMAC-signed webhooks and file uploads (5 files of 5 MB each per submission). The form is your own HTML on your own domain.

What you give up is everything Typeform is good at. splitforms has no one-question-at-a-time interface, no visual logic editor and no Typeform-style templates; with a plain HTML form you write the markup and any branching yourself. If the form experience drives completion, as with a long survey, a quiz or a scored lead-qualification flow, Typeform earns its price. If the form is a contact, waitlist or quote request box, you are paying for an interface you do not need.

Is Typeform safe and legit?

Yes. Typeform is an established company, founded in 2012 and run by Typeform SL in Barcelona, with Typeform US LLC serving US customers. Its security page lists SOC 2 Type II and ISO 27001:2022, 27017, 27018 and 42001 certifications, AWS hosting with main servers in Virginia, AES-256 encryption at rest and TLS 1.2 and 1.3 in transit, plus a GDPR Data Processing Agreement with Standard Contractual Clauses. The caveats are commercial: EU hosting and HIPAA are Enterprise-only, fees are non-refundable, and uploaded files get public links once you export responses or send them to an integration or webhook.

Typeform FAQ

Is Typeform free?

Yes, Typeform has a Free plan with unlimited forms and questions, branching logic and integrations such as Zapier and Google Sheets. It allows 10 responses a month across all your forms and shows Typeform branding. File uploads, payments, redirects, reCAPTCHA and branding removal need a paid plan.

How much does Typeform cost?

On the pricing page's plan cards, Basic is $39/month or $28/month billed yearly for 100 responses, Plus $79 or $56 for 1,000, and Business $129 or $91 for 10,000. Talent, Growth Flow and Enterprise sit above them. Extra responses are bought as add-ons in your account.

What happens when Typeform reaches its response limit?

Typeform warns you by email and in the app at 90% and 100%. At 100% your forms switch to Private mode and visitors see that the form is not accepting responses, until the month resets or you upgrade. If auto-upgrade is on, you move to the next response tier instead and are billed pro rata.

Can I remove Typeform branding?

Yes, from the Plus plan ($79/month, or $56/month billed yearly). Free and Basic forms show Typeform branding. Basic lets you add your own logo, and Plus adds a custom subdomain; custom domains are Enterprise-only.

Does Typeform have webhooks and an API?

Yes. Webhooks post each response as JSON to an HTTPS URL, can be signed with HMAC SHA-256 in a Typeform-Signature header, and are retried automatically on failure. The pricing page lists webhooks on Basic; the Free plan article lists Typeform's APIs on Free.

Where does Typeform store data, and is it GDPR compliant?

Standard accounts are hosted on AWS with main servers in Virginia, USA. Typeform offers a GDPR Data Processing Agreement with Standard Contractual Clauses, and EU data hosting on Enterprise and Growth Custom plans only.

Is Typeform worth it for a website contact form?

Usually not, unless the conversational format matters to you. A contact form only needs to deliver messages, and Typeform's Free and Basic plans stop at 10 and 100 responses a month. A plain HTML form posted to a form backend costs less at the same volume, with the trade-off that you build the form yourself.
